Michael Tweddle

Michael Tweddle

Michael Tweddle is the maestro behind EpicTerra Expeditions — a visionary in photography, conservation, and adventure. With a background in Audiovisual Communications from the Peruvian Advertising Institute, he began his career developing graphic campaigns for leading companies and organizations before channeling his skills fully into photography and conservation storytelling.

Driven by a profound concern for the environment, Michael has spent decades exploring remote regions of the world, fusing his passions for nature and visual storytelling. He pioneered photo safaris, nature tours, and photography workshops as a means to inspire a deeper understanding of biodiversity and cultural heritage, using art to advance environmental education and conservation. His work has been exhibited worldwide, from FotoEspaña and the Memorial María Luisa in Spain to Instituto Cervantes exhibitions in Australia, as well as in the UK, Russia, Slovenia, Portugal, and the UAE. These international expos have brought his vision of the Amazon, Peru, and the natural world to audiences worldwide.

His publications include collaborations with leading institutions, most notably the 2020 Smithsonian-backed book Amarakaeri: Connecting Biodiversity, which celebrates the ecological and cultural wealth of the Peruvian Amazon. His images have also been published by the Pulitzer Center, supporting investigative reporting on illegal logging and conservation in Peru. As a photographic author, his work has been featured in renowned coffee-table books, exhibitions, and art fairs, garnering wide recognition for its artistic quality and conservation value.

Michael’s conservation contributions extend far beyond the gallery. In 2016, he documented the first photographic record of a golden Andean bear (leucism) across its South American range, a significant scientific contribution. His photographic essay on Jaguars inspired a commemorative coin series of Endangered Wildlife produced by Peru’s Ministry of the Environment and the Central Reserve Bank, and his portraits of primates were immortalized in a Peruvian Postal Service philatelic collection titled The Primates of Peru. He has also engaged directly with the Smithsonian Institution’s Biodiversity Monitoring and Assessment Program (BMAP), merging science and imagery to support conservation outcomes.

His talent has earned him awards in prestigious photography competitions. His photographs, "Two in One" (Capybara & Rusty-margined Flycatcher) and "Amazon Reflection," received top honors. These accolades underscore his ability to blend technical mastery with storytelling power, creating images that both captivate and educate.

Beyond conservation and photography, Michael’s passion for adventure has fueled projects across disciplines. He has worked globally with organizations such as the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Pan-American Surf Association, photographing international sports events. His expeditionary spirit is evident in ventures such as the NatWild Namibia / Africa Expedition (2023) and the General Motors Hummer Extreme Team expedition (2003), which spanned from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Alaska’s Gates of the Arctic National Park.  Most recently, in 2025, he embarked on the Las Piedras River Expedition in the southern Peruvian Amazon, further deepening his commitment to documenting and protecting some of the most biodiverse yet threatened ecosystems on Earth.

Today, based in Lima, Peru, Michael manages photography and media consultancies while leading workshops and expeditions. Through EpicTerra Expeditions, he offers immersive journeys where participants learn advanced photographic techniques in some of the most biodiverse places on Earth, from the Tambopata National Reserve in Peru to landscapes as far-reaching as Iceland and Africa. These adventures unite art, science, and sustainability, creating transformative experiences where culture, nature, and conservation harmoniously converge.

Whether through a Pulitzer Center feature, an international gallery exhibition, a conservation campaign, or a dawn encounter with a jaguar in the Amazon, Michael Tweddle’s work speaks for itself. His images stand as both art and advocacy — a visual reminder of the beauty of our planet and the urgent need to protect it.
