Volunteer In The Amazon Rainforest

Step into the heart of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest and become part of a dedicated team working on conservation and wildlife rehabilitation. The Taricaya Ecological Reserve, surrounded by nearly 500 hectares (1,236 acres) of protected rainforest bordering Tambopata National Reserve, offers volunteers the chance to engage in meaningful, hands-on conservation work. Nestled along the Madre de Dios River, the lodge provides an immersive experience where each day brings a new adventure. Whether it's animal rehabilitation, wildlife monitoring, forestry, or trail maintenance, you will have the chance to connect with nature while contributing to critical environmental projects.

Living in the Amazon means embracing the sights and sounds of one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Volunteers will have the unique opportunity to learn from experienced conservationists, working alongside a team that includes veterinarians, biologists, ornithologists, and zoologists. From the early morning calls of exotic birds to the rustling of animals in the forest, this experience places you in the heart of the action, ensuring that your contribution helps preserve this incredible ecosystem and project for future generations.

Who Can Become a Volunteer?

Taricaya welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds and lifestyles, offering a unique opportunity to become part of our jungle community. Whether you're passionate about conservation, nature, or simply eager to experience the Amazon Rainforest, Taricaya is the perfect place for you. This program is ideal for students studying to become veterinarians, biologists, ornithologists, zoologists, or pursuing any career related to the environment, as it provides invaluable hands-on experience in wildlife conservation and sustainability.

If you’re ready to explore the Amazon like a local, immerse yourself in a new culture, and have a wholesome life experience, Taricaya will offer you an unforgettable adventure. You’ll live in the warm, humid climate of the tropical jungle, embracing the realities of insects and remote conditions, while contributing to important conservation efforts.

We welcome volunteers over 18 who are ready to travel and live independently, as well as those under 18 with legal permission from their parents or guardians. Teachers with nature-focused groups are also encouraged to join us (ask about our special class programs). If you have a passion for life, nature, and a desire to truly experience the wonders of the Amazon, Taricaya is ready for you.

To secure your reservation, please complete the Volunteer Form (one per person) and submit it once completed. We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to Taricaya!

As a volunteer, you will be part of several ongoing conservation and wildlife rehabilitation projects. Preferred activities are combined with regular projects essential to Taricaya. Additional Information

    Preparation

    • Volunteer Form: Make sure to fill out the required volunteer form. Located at the top in the introduction and at the bottom of the page.
    • Airfare and Timing: Both international and domestic airfare are not included in the package pricing. For your domestic flight to Puerto Maldonado (PEM), we recommend flying with LATAM, as they offer the most reliable schedule and have a strong track record for on-time service. We advise arriving in Puerto Maldonado in the morning, as boat transfers do not operate at night, ensuring you have a smooth and timely journey to Taricaya.
    • Travel Insurance: Highly recommended for any type of travel. Please note that it is not included in the package pricing, and we encourage you to arrange for comprehensive coverage that suits your needs. This will provide you with peace of mind and security in case of an emergency.
    • Packing List: Make sure to review the suggested packing list before packing for the trip.
    • Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your entry into Peru.
    • Tourist Entry: When entering Peru, you will do so as a tourist, as volunteering does not count for immigration or customs purposes. Ensure that you have the necessary documentation for tourist entry (such as your Passport and potentially a Visa), and comply with all immigration/customs regulations.
    • Visa Requirements: Citizens of the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and most Western European countries do not need a visa for tourism in Peru. However, if in doubt, verify through your airline or local Peruvian Consulate. Refer to this link for further information.
    • General Travel Advice: Refer to your airline's packing guidelines to ensure you know what is allowed to be carried during your flight.

    Travel Tips:

    • Address in Puerto Maldonado: Taricaya EcoReserve, Bajo Río Madre de Dios, Provincia Tambopata, Distrito: Tambopata.
    • Bank Cards: Ensure your credit/debit cards are valid throughout your stay and notify your bank about international use.
    • Spare Clothes: Keep a set of spare clothes in your carry-on in case your luggage is delayed.
    • Lost Luggage: If your luggage does not arrive in Lima, report it immediately, fill out a Property Irregularity Report, and give it to the Taricaya team for assistance.
    • Currency: Exchange some cash (USD or Euros) at Lima airport. ATMs and currency exchange offices are available in Puerto Maldonado but may close on weekends. Torn or old notes are not accepted.

    • Weather: Expect temperatures around 32°C during the day and 20-25°C at night with high humidity. A cold spell (Friaje) can drop temperatures to 10°C. Bring light, comfortable clothing and a jacket or sweatshirt for cold days.
    • Time Zone: Puerto Maldonado is GMT -5.

    Health and Safety:

    • Water: Drink plenty of water (2 to 4 liters daily) and always refill your bottle from the dining area. Do not drink tap water in your room.
    • Repellent: There are many mosquitoes in Taricaya, so it is highly recommended to use insect repellent that contains DEET to protect yourself from bites.
    • Meals: All meals are prepared by the kitchen staff. Breakfast is at 7:00 AM, lunch between 12:00-12:30 PM, and dinner at 6:30 PM. Activities for the next day are posted on the whiteboard each night.
    • Yellow Fever Vaccine: While there are no mandatory vaccines to enter Peru, it is recommended for all visitors traveling to the Peruvian jungle to get the Yellow Fever vaccine. There have been no cases of Yellow Fever in the Puerto Maldonado or Taricaya areas for many years. You can find more details on this here.
    • Malaria: While malaria is present in some areas of Peru, the risk in Puerto Maldonado is generally low. You can check more information about malaria in Puerto Maldonado here.
    • Rabies: If you plan to work closely with the animals at the Taricaya Animal Rescue Centre, it’s recommended to inform your doctor about your interaction with various animals, including monkeys, Spectacled (Andean) bears, birds, and small wild cats. Although it is very unlikely that these animals have rabies, we take great care of them under veterinary supervision, and all feeding is done through management enclosures to minimize direct contact.

    Practical Information:

This allows those who wish to spend the weekend in the city to relax, take a walk, enjoy a meal at a restaurant, or use the launderette. Clothes will be cleaned and folded for 5.50 to 7.00 PEN per kilo, and you can pick them up on Sunday evening. In Puerto Maldonado, there are also local launderettes where you can drop off your laundry in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon.
