Jaguar Encounter PANTANAL 8 days

The Pantanal isn’t just the world’s largest wetland — it’s a living, breathing wilderness where life thrives with a vibrancy that photographers and nature lovers rarely witness anywhere else. Fed by seasonal floods and shaped by the Paraguay River basin, this region fuels an explosion of biodiversity unmatched on Earth. This is where river channels glint with caiman silhouettes, hyacinth macaws flash across open skies, and the rosetted shadows of jaguars materialize along the riverbanks.

This expedition is led by award-winning wildlife and conservation photographer Michael Tweddle, whose decades in the Amazon and Peru’s wildlands have made him one of the most respected voices in South American natural storytelling. His work has been featured globally, and his book Amarakaeri: Connecting Biodiversity became part of the Smithsonian Institution’s conservation collection. Traveling with Michael means stepping into the field with someone who knows how to read landscapes, anticipate wildlife behavior, and lead photographers into moments that feel almost unreal.

You’ll explore the Pantanal from Cuiabá to Porto Jofre, navigating the iconic Transpantaneira Road and living aboard the Panorâmico, a mobile river-based lodge designed for comfort, stability, and maximum wildlife access. Each day brings new wildlife encounters — giant anteaters wandering across sunlit savannas, families of capybaras warming along the riverbanks, troops of howler monkeys shaking the canopy, and flocks of herons and jabirus crowding the water’s edge. But the true heartbeat of this expedition is the jaguar tracking. This region holds the highest density of jaguars on Earth — and our approach gives you the greatest chance of observing them hunting, mating, swimming, or resting along the river corridors.

Panorâmico Cruise:  The Panoramico features 12 cabins, each with two twin beds, air conditioning, and a mini-fridge. Each cabin is 6 m².  Private bathroom with shower and toiletries. Two beds measuring 2m x 0.90m with under-bed storage.  Cabins include a drawer unit, a nightstand, and an individual reading light. The ship is equipped with a 24-hour power generator. Multi-voltage 110V and 220V. Dining room with air conditioning. Lounge with air conditioning and satellite TV.  Sun deck with showers. Safety equipment includes life jackets and lifeboats. Support boats with 20 HP engines.  Excursion boats accommodate a maximum of 8 people, powered by 90 HP engines. The ship does not offer telephone services, internet, or laundry facilities, and accommodates up to 16 guests.

Itinerary

Jabiru Gathering

Day 1: Arrival in Cuiabá

Welcome to Brazil! Upon arrival at Cuiabá – Marechal Rondon International Airport, you will be warmly greeted and transferred just a few minutes away to your hotel, the Amazon Hotel.  This evening, enjoy a delicious welcome dinner at a traditional Brazilian steakhouse.

Overnight at Amazon Hotel (Dinner Included).

Playful Hyacinth Macaws

Day 2: Into the Pantanal

Start the day with anticipation as you depart from Cuiabá, embarking on a 2-hour transfer to the Pantanal in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle along the Transpantaneira road — the only year-round route that traverses deep into the heart of this vast wilderness. Our local guide will provide insights into the region's flora and fauna during the journey. Arrive at Pousada Piuval for a hearty lunch, where you'll be introduced to the delicious local cuisine. In the afternoon,  explore the expansive beauty of Piuval on an open-vehicle safari with a knowledgeable guide. As night falls, experience the Pantanal come alive with a guided night drive, offering a chance to spot nocturnal creatures.

Overnight at Pousada Piuval  (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included).

Day 3: Pousada Piuval Safari

Wake up early for a morning safari to witness the awakening of the Pantanal, with opportunities to spot diverse bird species, other wildlife, and, if we are lucky, a local jaguar. In the afternoon, continue exploring Piuval with another safari, focusing on different areas to maximize wildlife encounters. Another opportunity for a night drive to discover the nocturnal wonders of the Pantanal.

Overnight at Pousada Piuval  (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included).

Day 4: Giant Anteater and Transfer to Porto Jofre

Begin the day with a quest to spot the elusive Giant Anteater, one of the iconic species of the Pantanal. Enjoy a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle transfer to Porto Jofre, taking in the changing landscapes along the Transpantaneira road. Along the way, we will observe abundant wildlife, including capybaras, caimans, storks, Jabiru storks, parrots, and possibly even a big cat. Continue to the end of the road until we reach the small riverside village and port of Porto Jofre, where we will board small boats for the transfer to the Panorâmico ship. It is also possible to see this magnificent feline during the transfer, so be sure to keep your camera gear ready.

Overnight aboard the Panorâmico Boat Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included).

Day 5: Meeting of the Waters State Park

At sunrise, you’ll head out in fast boats to explore one of the most jaguar-rich regions on the planet: the Tres Irmãos River and adjoining channels. Spend the day scanning riverbanks for jaguars and other wildlife. Return midday to avoid peak heat, then head back out in the afternoon for another golden-hour safari.

Overnight aboard the Panorâmico Boat Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included).

Day 6: Jaguar Boat Safari

Another full day navigating the labyrinth of the Meeting of the Waters. This area holds the highest recorded concentration of jaguars on Earth, and each new river corridor opens possibilities for unforgettable sightings.

Overnight aboard the Panorâmico Boat Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included).

Day 7: Final Jaguar Safari

Your final day in jaguar territory brings one more chance to witness the power, grace, and raw beauty of the Pantanal’s apex predator. With luck, you may witness a hunt, territorial behavior, or cubs along the riverbanks.

Overnight aboard the Panorâmico Boat Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included).

Day 8: Return & Departure

Enjoy a final sunrise over the river before traveling back to Cuiabá. After lunch, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your onward flight — carrying home not just photos, but a deeper connection to one of Earth’s wildest and most fragile ecosystems.

Transfer to Cuiaba Airport and end of services (Breakfast and Lunch Included).
