Patagonia Expedition 11 Days

This 11-day journey discovers the enchanting vistas of Torres del Paine in Chilean Patagonia. Our expedition centers around the elusive puma, the second-largest cat in South America, flourishing in this untouched wilderness. Thanks to extensive conservation initiatives and a robust population of guanacos, the primary prey of these majestic cats, daily sightings are almost certain. Join us for an extraordinary adventure in a landscape shaped by nature's grandeur and wildlife wonders. 


Wildlife Encounters:

  • Pumas (Mountain Lions): Marvel at these secretive giants, with adult males reaching 8 ft and weighing 120 to 220 lbs.
  • Andean Condor: Witness the majestic flight of one of the largest flying birds.
  • Guanaco: Encounter the primary prey of pumas, roaming the vast grasslands.
  • Black-Chested Eagle: Observe the impressive aerial displays of this striking raptor.
  • Magellanic Penguin:  Delight in the charming presence of these captivating seabirds. 
  • Huemul Deer: Catch a rare glimpse of the critically endangered and elusive Huemul.
  • Culpeo and Chilla Foxes: Spot the red and grey foxes weaving through the landscape.
  • Pichi: Encounter the charming dwarf armadillo.
  • Geoffroy’s Cat: Marvel at the spotted beauty of this South American wildcat.
  • Darwin’s Rhea: Observe the flightless bird, a relative of the ostrich, in its natural habitat.
  •  Patagonia Sea Lion: Observe the lively and charismatic sea lions in their coastal habitat. 


Activities:

  • Puma Tracking: Guided by our expert tracking team. Via 4x4 transportation or hiking through rolling hills.
  • Nature Hikes: Immerse yourself in the stunning scenery while keeping an eye out for wildlife.
  • Bout Excursion:  Explore the coastal wonders and witness the diverse marine life around the Magellan Islands, and around Lago Grey. 
  • Wildlife Observation: Experience the thrill of witnessing animals in their natural habitat.


Weather and Preparation:
Prepare for Patagonia's ever-changing weather, featuring dramatic clouds, sun, wind, rain, and snow. Dress in layers to stay adaptable, ensuring you're equipped for the varied conditions.

Itinerary

Patagonia Sunset

Day 1: Arrival in Punta Arenas

Welcome! Upon your arrival in Punta Arenas, you'll be transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, there may be a short city sightseeing tour. Get ready to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this southern Chilean city. 


Overnight at the Hotel Diego de Almagro (Dinner provided).

Magellanic Penguins Observing

Day 2: Magdalena and Marta Islands Exploration

Embark on a captivating journey through the Strait of Magellan, starting at 07:30. Explore Magdalena Island, home to delightful Magellanic penguins showcasing their charm up close. Continue to Marta Island to witness the playful Patagonian sea lions and other marine species. Your adventure concludes around 14:00, followed by a late lunch in the city. Enjoy an overnight stay in Punta Arenas.


Note:  No tripods/stative allowed. The Magellanic penguins are incredibly close.

Andean Condor Flying

Day 3: Condor Hill Excursion and Puerto Natales

Pass over a picturesque route just 60 minutes from Punta Arenas to Estancia Olga Teresa, where the Condor Hill promises a captivating excursion. Guided by our professionals, utilize telescopes and binoculars to witness the majestic condors in their natural habitat. The optimal visit time, starting from 2:00 p.m., ensures a higher concentration of these magnificent birds, with a colony boasting around 200, among the largest in South America. Opt for a 4-hour tour, featuring a moderately challenging hike at 100 meters elevation or a swift 25-minute 4X4 ride to the nearest viewpoint, offering a unique opportunity for remarkable photos. Don't miss this chance at Estancia Olga Teresa before driving to the enchanting Puerto Natales.

Day 4: Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers Adventure

Set forth to Ultima Esperanza Fjord to discover the splendor of Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers. Departing from Puerto Natales, this morning's expedition showcases the immense beauty of the 4,300,000-hectare Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, the largest in Chile. Traverse Last Hope Sounds for approximately six hours, encountering historic sites, charming ranches, waterfalls, and vibrant wildlife, including Imperial Shag cormorants and sea lions. Witness the lush local flora and, after a three-hour journey, marvel at the Balmaceda Glacier. Dock at the fjord's end for a brief walk to the Serrano Glacier viewpoint before returning to Puerto Natales in the afternoon, capping off a day of unparalleled natural wonders. nchanting route, completing a day filled with unparalleled natural wonders.

Day 5: Puma Tracking in Torres del Paine

Before sunrise, our expert trackers scour the landscape for elusive Pumas. Once spotted, a 4X4 swiftly transports us to the closest point, followed by a guided walk to the cats' location. Our knowledgeable guides ensure a group approach, providing essential instructions. Depending on location and weather, we enjoy al-fresco dining or return to the hotel for a warm meal. The afternoon extends the adventure with a captivating safari in pursuit of these elusive felines, enhancing the thrill of this extraordinary wildlife encounter.

Stalking Puma

Day 6: Torres del Paine and Pumas

Puma sightings will resume at dawn, and skilled trackers seek elusive Pumas, swiftly transporting us to their location for a guided walk. Expert guides ensure a group approach with essential instructions. Depending on the conditions, we enjoy open-air or hotel dining. The afternoon brings a thrilling safari, enhancing this extraordinary wildlife encounter amid the untamed landscape.

Day 7: Puma Safari

Our third day offers more unique sightings of elusive Pumas. Depending on the setting, we indulge in open-air dining or return to the hotel for a warm meal. The adventure continues in the afternoon with a captivating safari, enhancing the thrill of this extraordinary wildlife encounter.

Day 8: Final Safaris and Drive to Puerto Natales

Conclude your exhilarating Puma trekking experience with both morning and afternoon safaris, immersing yourself in the captivating world of these elusive cats. Following these unforgettable wildlife encounters, a scenic drive back to Puerto Natales, where the enchanting landscapes provide a fitting backdrop for reflection. Unwind and savor the memories of the day as you settle in for a well-deserved rest, cherishing the unique moments.

From laid-back strolls to serene moments of contemplation, let the day unfold at your own unhurried rhythm, ensuring a refreshing break before your next adventure.

Day 10: Lago Grey Boat Excursion

Embark on a captivating morning boat excursion on Lago Grey, immersing yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the glacier and its picturesque surroundings. As the boat navigates the pristine waters, marvel at the towering ice formations and the pristine landscape that unfolds, creating a truly enchanting experience. Let the serenity of Lago Grey and the awe-inspiring presence of the glacier leave an indelible mark on your journey through this extraordinary natural wonder.

Day 11: Departure
